typical data processing system representing an

panels with an epoxy coating on the exterior
surface. However, if you presently have a woodcore
or concrete filled access floor panel in your facility, and it

concentrations of Zinc Whiskers. Scanning Electron
Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-Ray
Micro-analysis (SEM / EDX) is suited for the
analysis of Zinc Whiskers. By studying the structure
and the elemental composition of Zinc Whiskers we
can determine the source of the contamination as
well as the concentration of Zinc Whiskers within
your Computer Room and Data Processing Center.

Zinc Whisker Remediation and Consulting Services

Value Facility Services, Inc has
recognized that mechanical shock, vibration or
handling of any Zinc Whisker contaminated surfaces
may cause whiskers to break loose from the plated
surface. Once free to move about, these conductive
particles may then interfere with sensitive optical
surfaces or the movement of micro electromechanical
systems (MEMS). In addition, the debris may also
bridge isolated conductors resulting in short
circuits within your computer equipment in your Data
Processing Center. The initial studies of Zinc Whisker
growth and development showed that they occurred spontaneously.
With the research we have available today we realize this is
not true. At one time, we even believed Zinc Whiskers
could develop in a vacuum type of environment where there was no air
or water. However, when we consider a vacuum type of environment
where there is an absence of vibration or mechanical shock we
realize that this is the ideal environment for Zinc Whiskers to develop.
Therefore we can safely say, Zinc Whiskers can and will grow too inconceivable
lengths if left undisturbed in any type of environment.
